In 1998, when David Johnston was finishing his degree in criminal justice at UT-Dallas, he built a deck on the back of his house. His neighbor, impressed, asked him to build one for him, too. Johnston is no stranger to hard work: an Eagle Scout, he was raised with a carpenter for a grandfather and a father who’d always included young David in woodworking projects. He said, “yes,” to his neighbor, and built him a new deck to surround a hot tub. When the hot tub arrived, the installer immediately asked who’d built the custom deck, and told David that he’d have plenty of work for him if he were interested.
“That was the beginning,That summer, my right-hand-man and I built 27 decks.”
Today, almost 20 years later, Deck Right builds custom decks, pergolas, outdoor living spaces, custom fences, stonework, and drive gates for McKinney, Frisco, Rockwall, and Rowlett and surrounding communities. With a solid commitment to quality and customization, Johnston continues to have his hands in the design and construction of every project Deck Right takes on. “From start to finish, I’m a part of every project. I’ll meet with homeowners to determine the vision they have for their space. My clients trust me because I shoot them straight. I don’t subcontract my crews—my craftsmen work for me—and the quality of our work speaks for itself.”
Besides natural wood products, Deck Right also is a dealer for Azek and Timber- Tech, two top-of-the-line PVC and composite decking products that have a longevity, durability, and beauty as an alternative to natural wood. “We used the best products available and I employ the finest craftsmen. We install our products with the best practices so that your deck or outdoor space continues to be durable and beautiful for a long time.”
There is truly no job too big or too small for Deck Right, and Johnston sees that as a major benefit to his clients. They customize their projects to any backyard. They can create a new space, or revitalize an existing space that needs an upgrade and an update. “We can do small and simple or the most elaborate design we can create together,” says Johnston.
Deck Right is committed to recycling and uses reclaimed wood in specific projects. They also sell reclaimed pieces to artists and retailers. “When you have a lifetime love of woodworking, you can see how valuable each piece is, or can be,” says Johnston. “My goal is to have unique, innovative projects that make clients want to spend their time outside. They trust me to get the job right, and I won’t let them down.”
